Access Allround was commissioned by The Hythe School to install a modular ramp system equipped with advanced safety features. The objectives were to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to create a user-friendly environment for all individuals, including children and those with visual impairments.

Scope of Work

    • Installation of Modular Ramp with Rubber Crumb Surface: A modular ramp system was selected for its adaptability and ease of installation. The ramp was surfaced with a rubber crumb material, known for its non-slip properties and cushioning effect, thereby reducing the risk of injury in case of falls—a crucial consideration in environments frequented by children.
    • Compliance with Regulatory Standards: To adhere to Document M and Document K regulations, 1100mm high balustrade handrails were installed on the threshold platform, ensuring safety and accessibility for all users.

Safety Enhancements

  • Mesh Fencing: Installed around the base of the ramp, the mesh fencing serves a dual purpose: preventing children from crawling underneath and sustaining injuries, and acting as a maintenance-free barrier that deters rubbish accumulation beneath the ramp.
  • High-Visibility Edging: Yellow edging was applied to all level changes to assist individuals with impaired vision in identifying transitions, thereby enhancing safety.
  • Preservation of Existing Access: The design thoughtfully left the right-hand side open, allowing individuals the option to use the existing steps if they prefer, accommodating user preferences.

Installation

The installation process was meticulously planned and executed to ensure minimal disruption and maximum efficiency:

  • Site Assessment: A thorough site survey was conducted to understand the specific requirements and constraints of the location.
  • Preparation: The area designated for the ramp was cleared and prepared, ensuring a stable foundation for the modular system.
  • Assembly: The modular components were assembled on-site, allowing for rapid construction and immediate adjustments as needed.
  • Safety Feature Integration: The rubber crumb surface, balustrade handrails, mesh fencing, and high-visibility edging were installed to enhance safety and compliance.
  • Final Inspection: A comprehensive inspection was conducted to ensure that all elements met the required standards and functioned as intended.

The implementation of the modular ramp system has significantly improved the safety and accessibility of the entryway. The rubber crumb surface provides a slip-resistant and cushioned pathway, reducing the likelihood of injuries from falls. The installation of compliant handrails and high-visibility edging ensures that the ramp meets current safety regulations and is user-friendly for individuals with visual impairments. Additionally, the mesh fencing enhances safety for children and minimises maintenance efforts by preventing debris accumulation. By preserving the existing steps, the design offers flexibility, catering to the preferences of all users.
