Access Allround was selected to design and install a modular ramp system at the side entrance of Royal Holloway University. Given the high foot traffic in this public area, the project required a durable and safe solution that would blend seamlessly with the existing architecture while meeting the needs of all users, including those with impaired vision.
Scope of Work:
- Modular Ramp System: A modular ramp system was chosen for its versatility and ease of installation. The ramp was installed at the side entrance, providing a smooth and accessible entry point for students, staff, and visitors.
- Rubber Crumb Topping: The ramp was finished with our specialised rubber crumb topping, renowned for its non-slip properties. This surface is ideal for areas with heavy foot traffic, ensuring safety in all weather conditions. As the rubber crumb topping is a custom product, it requires a lead time of 7-9 weeks, as these materials are not available off the shelf.
- Handrails and Edging: To maintain a uniform appearance, black handrails were installed to match the rubber crumb topping and bases. In addition, the edges of the ramp were sprayed yellow, providing a clear visual cue to notify individuals with impaired vision of the level change.
Installation:
- Efficient Installation: The entire installation was completed within a few hours, minimising disruption to the university’s operations. The quick turnaround ensured that the ramp was ready for use almost immediately after installation.
The modular ramp system at Royal Holloway University has significantly improved accessibility at the side entrance. The combination of the rubber crumb topping and yellow-edged detailing has enhanced safety for all users, particularly those with impaired vision. The uniform design, with matching handrails and bases, ensures that the new installation blends seamlessly with the existing architecture, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the university.
