Access Allround was commissioned to replacing a non-compliant modular ramp that had been previously installed at a property in Manor Crescent. The existing ramp presented multiple challenges, including a steep gradient and insufficient resting platforms, which made it difficult for the customer to navigate safely with a mobility scooter. Access Allround delivered a safe, user-friendly solution through extensive ground modifications and innovative design.
Scope of Work
Our primary objective was to replace the non-compliant ramp with one that adhered to current regulations. Key issues identified included:
- A gradient that was too steep.
- Rest platforms that lacked sufficient space for the customer to turn safely.
- Structural deficiencies that impeded accessibility.
To resolve these issues, the team excavated additional ground to achieve the correct ramp gradient, enlarged the threshold platform for added usability, and implemented measures to stabilise the surrounding landscape.
Installation
- Excavation and Groundwork: An additional 8-yard skip of soil and debris was removed to lower the ramp’s gradient to a compliant 3.5 degrees. Support boards were added around the garden to prevent soil erosion and stabilise the area.
- Adjustments for Utility Infrastructure: During the excavation, a gas main was exposed. Collaborating with a gas specialist, the main was safely lowered without disrupting the property’s internal utilities.
- Enhanced Accessibility: The threshold platform was widened to allow the customer to store their scooter in a nearby shed easily. The new design prioritised both functionality and safety.
The new design is safer and easier to manoeuvre and the customer is ecstatically pleased with their new ramp. With its compliant gradient and spacious platforms, the customer can now navigate the ramp effortlessly.
